Recovering lost Covid cash would mean billions for struggling public services

  • 9 October 2023

Commenting on the shadow chancellor’s speech to the Labour Party conference in Liverpool today (Monday), UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:

“Rachel Reeves set out a compelling vision. Under Labour the UK’s finances would be run responsibly and fairly, mending a Britain broken by 13 years of disastrous Conservative rule.

“Growth would be created and investment attracted. That would rebuild crumbling public services, restore people’s confidence and boost precarious family incomes.

“Rishi Sunak has utterly failed to recover the billions stolen through Covid fraud. Labour’s corruption commissioner would leave no stone unturned and return this much-needed cash to the public purse.

“This was a serious speech from the woman who should be the UK’s next chancellor. An election can’t come soon enough.”
