‘We Are Police Staff’ is a new film from UNISON to promote and defend the work of police staff in England, Scotland and Wales in the face of budget cuts.
UNISON national officer Ben Priestly said: “Our police staff members do a vital job to keep communities safe by solving crime and bringing offenders to justice. The first voice you hear when you call the police in an emergency will be a police staff 999 call taker. Another member of police staff – a dispatcher – will send the police officers when you need help fast. Protecting police staff jobs keeps us all safe.”
The film champions the often unseen and unrecognised work of UNISON police staff members.
Branch secretary of UNISON Police Scotland, which has its own film, David Malcolm said: “The role of the police staff member gets lost in the public eye and in the media. It’s always dominated by officers. People don’t realise that staff are often doing very similar jobs, and carrying out vital roles for policing.”
In a blog written earlier this week, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said: “The lack of understanding that the public, media and politicians have about police staff means they cannot truly comprehend the critical role they play in our society.”
