UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea has written to the head of the Jamaica Association of Local Government Officers (JALGO) as the island starts to recover from the destruction brought by hurricane Melissa.
Sending solidarity to JALGO general secretary Helene Davis-Whyte, Christina says: “We know that many have been left homeless as a result of flooding and hospitals, schools and other essential public service have been damaged.
“Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by the devastation and those who are concerned about family, friends and loved ones.
“JALGO has consistently campaigned to highlight how human driven climate change is responsible for catastrophic weather events, and we support you in your demand for quality public services to protect the population.”
To show solidarity with those in Jamaica who are suffering after the worst storm to hit the island, UNISON is encouraging branches and members to contribute what they can to the Red Cross appeal.
