I would like to thank all UNISON Members in the UK who voted for me in the recent NEC Elections - I received nearly 24,000 votes which, for a 'first-timer' is a fantastic achievement. On this ocassion however, it was not quite enough and a colleague from Bromley who has been on the NEC for many years, was successful achieving 28,000 votes. I would like to congratulate Glenn Kelly on his re-election and thank all those who voted for me. I will continue to work on the Service Group Executive and represent Members from the North West in Local Government at a national level and hope to build an even bigger vote for the next NEC election in 2 years time. The new Chief Executive has announced a possible £10 million budget deficit and the likely difficulties in meeting this without job losses. The BNP got elected in the North West in the Euro elections despite this Branch being involved in some high profile campaigning. These are difficult times indeed and UNISON believes there will be trouble ahead. Research shows that for every £1 Council employees receive, they put back 64p into the local economy. The answer is not to create redundancies and UNISON will oppose any such plans. If ever there was a time for union members to be active, it is now. UNISON is scheduled to meet the Chief Executive on 16th June and again on 15th July and will make it clear that compulsory redundancies will be met with opposition and will create poor industrial relations between us and the Council. We will keep our members informed as this situation develops. If you know a colleague who is not in UNISON, why not ask them to consider joining. The bigger we are, the stronger we are. Glen Williams, Branch Secretary, Sefton UNISON. |

UNISON Officers and Stewards, and, I am sure, UNISON Members are often told 'there is no point being in a union'. In Sefton, thousands of UNISON members of staff will tell you that this is simply not true unless of course you: - Never go off sick
- Get on perfectly all the time with your boss, employer and colleagues
- Have never been passed over for promotion
- Are overpaid for what you do and
- Never face the prospect of being bullied, disciplined, made redundant or even dismissed.
If you are in these categories, you clearly do not work for the same local authority as all other Sefton Colleagues. UNISON is not only about defending Members' rights, it is about campaigning for better conditions of service for all Members as well as the many additional benefits of being part of the biggest public service union in the UK. If you are not in UNISON, you are not insured against some of the potential negative prospects referred to above. The cost of joining is outweighed, not just by peace of mind membership brings, but economically by the savings that are made in many local shops, simply by being a member of UNISON. If you wish to join, simply call 0151 928 9911 it is that easy. |
