Newsflash

22nd September - NJC COMMITTEE AGREES THE WAY FORWARD ON PAY

UNISON's NJC Committee met on 18th September to review progress in the negotiations which have followed the 2 days of action in July over the pay award. The important decisions that were made at this meeting have today (22/9/08) been emailed to all UNISON members in Sefton for whom we have an email address (home or work).

If you have not received this and have an email address, or would like a hard copy sending to you, please contact the Branch Office on 0151 928 9911. We will keep you posted as the position develops.

STRIKE DEDUCTIONS

With indecent haste Sefton Council has managed to claw back Strike deductions from our pay. I am sure the Council will issue equally urgent instructions to our 100% Membership in Payroll when it comes to the council underpaying us, or when the pay talks are successfully concluded and we have a pay rise and a backdated element too. Equally distaseful was the punitive 1/5th rate of strike deduction compounded by the Council's position on those working a compressed working week. Sefton UNISON has challenged this and it is now likely we will be taking the Council to Court for illegal deduction of wages - we will keep you posted.

Pay Talks Continue

As of 31st August, the Pay talks at a National Level continue. There have been two formal meetings between the Employer and the Trade Unions with further meetings planned. To date, the talks have explored the parameters and the process of the negotiations.

I hope to be able to give more detailed feedback next week. Through your Stewards, we have already undertaken feedback in relation to the 2 days Strike Action and future possibilities around further action should the need arise. This will be reported back to the National Office through the Regional Local Government Committee structures in which Sefton UNISON is well represented.

If you have an email address, home or work, please make sure UNISON has it so we can ensure ongoing communication is up-to-date and rapid.

Capita Symonds

6th September 2008

"Capita Symonds have rushed ahead of themselves and have caused much unnecessary disharmony"  So said a very senior member of the Council last week. That spokesperson went on to say that "Capita Symonds would be told to back off and that they were doing little for industrial relations" . UNISON told elected members that Capita Symonds would be imposing 90 days notice on its transferees in order to move the Pay date from 15th - 27th of each month. The issue itself is important for our members, but of much more concern is the dictatorial manner in which the company intends to introduce it to any who do not agree - ie , by issuing formal notice. Capita Symonds also announced plans to alter the holiday arrangements as well as the rate at which car mileage will be paid. UNISON can only assume that as UNISON Members will not agree to this, 2 further 90 days notices will be going out on day one of the transfer.

A senior Elected member expressed absolute dismay and disgust at the manner in which change was to be introduced saying: "It will not look good on day one of transfer if the managing board of that company is facing a Ballot for Industrial Action".

Senior Officers of the Council, Senior elected members of the Council and Senior Members of UNISON will meet separately with Capita Symonds, but will all be saying the same thing - back off and be reasonable!
