Commenting on the latest breakthrough to end Gaza hostilities, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said today (Thursday):
“A ceasefire will be an immense relief to Palestinians in Gaza who have endured the most extraordinary devastation and suffering.
“It’s also a moment of enormous relief for the hostages and their families, following two years of captivity in the most appalling conditions.
“Today’s announcement is a long overdue first step. It must result in full and unrestricted access to humanitarian assistance immediately, the rapid withdrawal of Israeli forces and the safe, speedy release of all hostages.
“Implementation of the agreement must be backed by a Palestinian-led, internationally supported programme of reconstruction to ensure decent work and quality public services for all.
“While there’s enormous hope and relief for so many today, our thoughts are also with those who grieve the loss of family and loved ones after two years of devastation.
“This must be the beginning of an irreversible journey to lasting peace, with an end to the occupation and annexation of the West Bank and a viable Palestinian State alongside a safe and secure Israel. It’s up to the international community to make sure this happens.”
