UNISON’s National Executive Council (NEC) has today condemned the Israeli military attack on Iran, which is a threat to peace in the Middle East and around the world, and supports calls for an immediate de-escalation and a resumption of talks on a nuclear peace agreement.
The NEC notes that on 13 June, the Israeli military launched an attack on military leaders and nuclear and military sites in Iran. The Israeli government has subsequently attacked other targets including the ministry of defence and oil production.
It has been reported that many civilians have been killed or injured in the attacks and public services have been hit. The Iranian regime has also launched retaliatory airstrikes against Israel which have hit a number of residential areas, killing civilians.
The NEC further notes that Israel’s attack on Iran was launched two days prior to the resumption of nuclear peace talks between the US and Iran. We call for a resumption of these talks. Only diplomacy and dialogue will lead to an agreement that will protect the people of the Middle East from the threat of nuclear war.
As the Israeli government launched its attack on Iran, it initiated a severe lockdown of Palestinian cities, towns and villages across the occupied West Bank and closed the borders. We condemn these further restrictions on freedom of movement, including preventing Palestinian movement between areas and increasing the number of military checkpoints.
The NEC calls on the UK government to condemn the attack on Iran by the Israeli government and call for de-escalation and a return to peace talks at the UN Security Council and in other appropriate fora.
