Commenting on the government’s response to the findings of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, UNISON assistant general secretary Jon Richards said today (Wednesday):
“Words can barely describe the horrors of that night, including the pain still suffered by the survivors and the victims’ families.
“It is reassuring that Angela Rayner has accepted all findings of the independent inquiry and announced building and fire safety reforms designed to prevent a repeat of such an avoidable tragedy.
“Boosting protection for social housing tenants is essential. Residents should be able to challenge landlords and demand safe buildings.
“No one should be forced to live in a home in which they feel unsafe, so unsafe cladding must be removed from every tower block in the country as a priority.
“Thousands of people – including many public sector workers – are still living and working in dangerous properties. The legacy of the Grenfell Tower must be safer homes for everybody.”
