Fair pay and introduction of a national care service are vital to transform social care

  • 2 March 2026

Commenting on a new report published today (Monday) by The King’s Fund that says the social care crisis must be put back on the political agenda, UNISON head of social care Gavin Edwards said:

“Millions of people depend on social care to live independently. But years of neglect have left the sector in crisis, with tens of thousands of posts unfilled.

“The fair pay agreement promised by this government must be brought in without further delay.

“It must be accompanied by extra funding, so higher wages and better working conditions aren’t paid for by cutting services.

“A national care service is also a priority with world-class care at its heart, rather than profits for shareholders.

“The Casey Commission has to be speeded up to avoid these important reforms dragging on into the next general election campaign unresolved.”

Notes to editors:
– UNISON is the UK’s largest union, with more than 1.3 million members providing public services in education, local government, the NHS, police service and energy. They are employed in the public, voluntary and private sectors.
