Commenting on the prime minister’s announcement today (Sunday) that the UK will recognise the state of Palestine, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:
“Recognition of the state of Palestine is an important step towards bringing about a two-state solution and peace to the region, ending the illegal occupation, and respecting basic human and workers’ rights.
“The UK government must take further steps to bring about a permanent ceasefire, full access to humanitarian assistance and the release of all remaining hostages.
“There needs to be a full suspension of the arms trade with Israel and ministers should also suspend the UK Israel Trade and Partnership Agreement.
“Banning trade with the illegal settlements and extending sanctions to anyone violating international law, is crucial too.
“The situation in Gaza, with widespread famine, has never been more critical.
“Ministers should work with international partners to put pressure on the Israeli government to end the blockade and get unrestricted aid into Gaza without delay.”
