The 4 things we learned from the TUC Congress

1 Unions are determined to hold the government to its promises on employment rights

We’ve talked a lot about the Employment Rights Bill – and the debate continued in Brighton amid rumours that the government was in danger of delaying or watering down parts of it. The government responded by assuring everyone that it was fully committed to implementing it.

2 UNISON will not let the government off the hook on NHS subcos

UNISON has long campaigned against wholly owned subsidiaries (subcos) in the NHS and elsewhere. We shone a spotlight on it again in Brighton.

3 The trade union movement is unwavering in its support for Palestine

As there appears to be no end in sight to the genocide in Gaza, Congress urged the government “to take meaningful action to secure an immediate, complete, and permanent ceasefire with full access for food and aid delivery into Gaza”.

4 Unions will continue to stand up to Reform and the far right

Reform is never far from a dog whistle or a cheap headline. The TUC leader accused Farage of selling out working people and demanded a windfall tax on the banking sector.
