Commenting on the publication today (Wednesday) of the Leng review into the safety and contribution of physician associates and anaesthesia associates, UNISON head of health Helga Pile said:
“By working closely with doctors and other healthcare professionals, these roles can make a real difference to the improvement of services and reduction of waiting lists.
“Clearer identification of physician associates and anaesthesia associates will give patients a greater understanding of who’s delivering their care and what they can expect.
“Giving recognition to the skills and experience of staff is important, and providing opportunities to develop and specialise are welcome.
“It’s vital those in associate roles are treated fairly, with good supervision, in order for them to thrive and contribute to the NHS.
“Although there are still many issues to work through, this review has provided the opportunity for a much-needed reset.”
