UNISON’s objectives include fighting for fairness and equality and challenging all forms of discrimination including any form of racism. We have always stood for the rights and equality of all people, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or background.
Expressions of national pride around important anniversaries and sporting achievements can be positive and unifying. However, some recent demonstrations and rallies presented as celebrations of heritage, have been linked to political groups promoting division. This leaves communities, black workers, migrants and those from refugee backgroundsfeeling intimidated, isolated or excluded. This has created tension and conflict.
UNISON is clear that our public services depend on people of all backgrounds, nationalities, race and religion. Our union is opposed to all actions which threaten safety, fairness, or community cohesion. We will work with other unions, the TUC and other organisations to challenge racism and discrimination and call on the government to ensure that race and hate crimes are tackled as a priority.
Our response reflects UNISON’s core objectives. Through bargaining, campaigning, training and organisational development, we work to protect members, challenge intolerance, equip members to respond to harassment, and strengthen our union to uphold equality, respect, and solidarity.
We encourage branches to engage with members, particularly those who feel vulnerable at this time, and continue promoting our values in workplaces and communities.
If members have any concerns, please contact your steward or branch.
