Commenting on the King’s Speech delivered today (Wednesday), UNISON general secretary Andrea Egan said:
“These measures confirm the government simply doesn’t understand the magnitude of the transformation needed across the UK.
“There’s nothing to address the chronic underfunding of public services, low pay or the vast wealth-inequality gap.
“Nor is there a serious plan to reverse the racket of handing contracts to companies who put profit before people and decent services.
“Instead of taking water into public ownership, the government’s decided to change the regulator. That’s a missed opportunity to fix a broken system, and secure clean, affordable water and safe jobs for future generations.
“The pressing issue of social care remains in the long grass.
“A radical change of approach is needed. Only a Labour government which unashamedly puts the interests of working people before the wealthy has a hope of succeeding.”
