UNISON condemns the Iranian regime’s brutal crackdown against mass protests in response to the economic and social crisis in Iran.
According to reports many hundreds of people, possibly thousands, have been killed by security forces as the government attempts to supress the biggest demonstrations Iran has seen in many years.
Thousands more protestors have been detained during the crackdown, with some reported to be facing the death penalty. Hospitals have been overwhelmed by the huge number of protestors who have been violently assaulted and authorities have shut down the internet to restrict communications.
The latest protests, which have spread rapidly throughout Iran, began at the end of 2025, following the collapse of the currency. Independent trade unions, effectively outlawed by the regime, workers and social movements have responded to rocketing prices for food and essential goods, the erosion of wages and increasing unemployment, with widespread strike action and protests.
UNISON stands in solidarity with workers and independent trade unions in Iran. We urge the regime to end the violent suppression of protests and the mass detention of protestors, and respond to their legitimate demands for better economic conditions, democracy, human and workers’ rights, justice and peace.
We note with concern the threat of military intervention by the US government and call for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Iran, based on justice, respect for human and trade union rights and international law.
