Commenting on the publication today (Thursday) of the government’s violence against women and girls strategy, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:
“No woman should have to endure verbal abuse, sexual assault, stalking or any kind of misogyny. This abuse has a lasting effect on women, their families and colleagues.
“The government is right to focus on prevention, but effective action is long overdue. Changing the attitudes of boys and young men is crucial if assaults and harassment against women are to be curbed.
“New funding from ministers to support victims is a start. But so much more is needed to address this epidemic of violence and to rebuild the services cut in recent years.
“UNISON has campaigned successfully for workplace protection for domestic abuse survivors. Ministers must now commit to proper investment and enforcement.
“Evidence will be needed to show the new strategy is working, and quickly. Otherwise, women will face devastating consequences.”
