Commenting on the budget, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said today (Wednesday):
“Scrapping the cruel two-child benefit cap is a victory for thousands of working families. Good riddance to it. But it should’ve happened sooner.
“It shows Labour is at last heading in the right direction and helping those who most need support.
“But the government must go further and faster if it wants to fix Britain.
“The NHS, schools, councils, the police and other essential services require sustained investment if they are to deliver the changes voters want.
“Labour was left a dire inheritance, but ministers need to be braver and shift the dial back towards working people.
“The chancellor could and should have asked the wealthiest to pay more. Putting money in the pockets of working people boosts local economies. Freezing tax thresholds does the opposite.”
