Commenting on the conference speech given by housing, communities and local government secretary Steve Reed in Liverpool today (Sunday) in which he committed to get Britain building again, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:
“Getting home-building back on track means essential public service employees stand a much better chance of finding a decent place to live.
“Being able to afford their own home is one of the most pressing issues for younger workers too. At the moment, it’s something beyond the reach of most.
“Any increase in affordable housing won’t just help tens of thousands of people financially, it should also lead to much shorter journeys to work.
“The high cost of housing has forced many care, school, health, council, police and other public sector staff to live miles from where their jobs are based.
“Getting rid of lengthy journeys to work would encourage staff to stay in their jobs for longer. That’s good news for communities, their colleagues and the wider UK economy too.”
