UNISON is working with its long-standing partner, the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) to deliver supplies of rice, lentils and other staple foods to Cuba.
Cuba is in its worst economic crisis since the Cold War. In January, the US cut Cuba off from its Venezuelan oil supplies, sparking fuel shortages, extreme inflation, and total power blackouts across the country.
The first consignment of food – a 40-foot container carrying 28 tonnes of rice and lentils – left the UK at the end of February. UNISON intends to send another one as soon as possible – but needs your donations to ensure this can happen.

Ronan Ogilvy, international relations officer for UNISON Perth and Kinross said: “I am inspired by Cuba’s solidarity and internationalism. Despite their own challenges, the Cuban model of public service knows no borders, and it should inspire us in Britain. After decades of sending aid around the world, Cuba desperately needs us to return the favour.”
UNISON assistant general secretary Liz Snape added: “After recently meeting the Cuban Ambassador to the UK, one thing is clear – US pressure is hurting ordinary people. Babies delivered by phone torch. Food shortages intensifying. The Cuban people need our solidarity, now more than ever.”
