Ditching equality would start the race to the bottom, says UNISON

  • 17 February 2026
Commenting on proposals by Reform UK to ditch equality legislation were it to be elected, UNISON assistant general secretary Jon Richards said:

“Reform is firing the starting gun on the race to the bottom.

“Far from standing against division, Reform is showing it wants to bring back discrimination.

“The party’s long made clear it’s against anything that improves rights at work or fairness.

“Ripping up protection would do nothing to get the country back on its feet or help anyone in work.

“Without the equality act, unscrupulous employers would be free to treat staff terribly with little chance of ever being challenged.”

Notes to editors:
– UNISON is the UK’s largest union, with more than 1.3 million members providing public services in education, local government, the NHS, police service and energy. They are employed in the public, voluntary and private sectors.
