Last chance to automatically receive Warm Home Discount this winter

  • 22 August 2025

The UK government is reminding households on eligible means-tested benefits to ensure they are named on their electricity bill, so they can automatically receive the £150 Warm Home Discount this winter.

The scheme has been expanded to cover over six million households, an increase of 2.7 million from last year, including 900,000 more families with children.

In England and Wales, households receiving Housing Benefit, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, Pension Credit, or Universal Credit will qualify.

The qualifying date is Sunday 24 August 2025, when energy suppliers will match benefit records to the names on electricity bills. If an eligible person is not named on the bill, they may miss out on automatic payment.

Someone might not be named on their electricity bill if they have recently moved house and changed supplier.

Prepayment meter users must also ensure the account is registered in their name.

In Scotland, households receiving Pension Credit who are named on their bill will receive the discount automatically, while others on means-tested benefits will need to apply through their supplier from October.

After August 24, eligible households will still be able to receive the discount, but they will need to wait for a letter to arrive later this year. If they have not received a letter by January 2026, then they will need to call the helpline.
