Commenting on the appointment of long-standing UNISON activist Wendy Nichols to the House of Lords today (Friday), UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said:
“The appointment of Wendy Nichols as one of the new Labour lords is fantastic news. It’s well-deserved recognition for the tireless work of one of the union’s long-serving activists and I’m delighted for her.
“Wendy will be a real asset to the country in raising important issues at the highest level, shaping legislation and drawing on her substantial experience of local government and public services.
“She’s been part of UNISON since its formation more than three decades ago and has played a leading role in the union over the years.
“It’s also pleasing to see another prominent UNISON figure be recognised today. Theresa Griffin was a great regional officer for the union.
“I wish them both well in their new roles.”
